Description

A simple recipe for macaroni and cheese made with white cheddar, mixed with cooked shrimp and green peas.


Ingredients

  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni or small shells
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 ounces white cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup frozen green peas

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
  2. While the pasta cooks, melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Whisk in the flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth.
  5. Cook, stirring often, until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 7 minutes. Do not let it boil rapidly.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the shredded white cheddar cheese until completely melted and smooth.
  7. Stir in the salt and pepper.
  8. Add the cooked shrimp and frozen peas to the cheese sauce. Stir gently to combine.
  9. Add the drained pasta to the sauce mixture. Stir until the pasta is evenly coated.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can use pre-cooked frozen shrimp if you thaw and drain them first.
  • For richer flavor, use whole milk in the sauce.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick upon standing, add a splash of milk to thin it.
