Description
A simple recipe for macaroni and cheese made with white cheddar, mixed with cooked shrimp and green peas.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni or small shells
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 4 ounces white cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 cup frozen green peas
Instructions
- Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
- While the pasta cooks, melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth.
- Cook, stirring often, until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 7 minutes. Do not let it boil rapidly.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the shredded white cheddar cheese until completely melted and smooth.
- Stir in the salt and pepper.
- Add the cooked shrimp and frozen peas to the cheese sauce. Stir gently to combine.
- Add the drained pasta to the sauce mixture. Stir until the pasta is evenly coated.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can use pre-cooked frozen shrimp if you thaw and drain them first.
- For richer flavor, use whole milk in the sauce.
- If the sauce becomes too thick upon standing, add a splash of milk to thin it.
