Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sparkling water or club soda
- Fresh basil sprigs for garnish
- Strawberry slices for garnish
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine sliced strawberries, basil leaves, granulated sugar, and water.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the strawberries soften, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher, pressing gently on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.
- Chill the strawberry-basil syrup until cold.
- To serve, fill glasses with ice. Pour 1/4 cup of the chilled syrup into each glass.
- Top with sparkling water or club soda.
- Stir gently and garnish with fresh basil sprigs and strawberry slices.
Notes
- For a sweeter drink, add more sugar to the syrup.
- For a less sweet drink, use less sugar or omit it entirely.
- You can make the strawberry-basil syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
