Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1.5 cups spiced rum
  • Whipped cream for garnish (optional)
  • Ground nutmeg for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until just simmering. Do not boil.
  3. Slowly temper the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon. Do not boil.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves.
  6. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl or pitcher.
  7. Stir in the spiced rum.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to chill and allow the flavors to meld.
  9. Serve chilled, garnished with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg if desired.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the spiced rum.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar to your preference.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
