Description

Sweet dinner rolls topped with a simple orange glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar plus 1 teaspoon for yeast
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, 1 teaspoon sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, melted butter, and egg into the yeast mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough. Divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them close together in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
  8. Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375F (190C).
  10. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. While the rolls cool slightly, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest for the glaze.
  12. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls before serving.

Notes

  • For a stronger orange flavor, use 1 tablespoon of orange juice in the glaze.
  • You can use fresh yeast if you prefer, adjusting the amount according to package directions.
  • If your kitchen is cool, place the covered dough in a slightly warm (but turned off) oven to aid rising.
