Description
Sweet dinner rolls topped with a simple orange glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115F)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar plus 1 teaspoon for yeast
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
Instructions
- Combine warm milk, 1 teaspoon sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, melted butter, and egg into the yeast mixture.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough. Divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them close together in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375F (190C).
- Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the rolls cool slightly, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest for the glaze.
- Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls before serving.
Notes
- For a stronger orange flavor, use 1 tablespoon of orange juice in the glaze.
- You can use fresh yeast if you prefer, adjusting the amount according to package directions.
- If your kitchen is cool, place the covered dough in a slightly warm (but turned off) oven to aid rising.
