Description

A straightforward recipe for classic meatball subs with tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 4 submarine rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix gently.
  2. Form the mixture into 12 small meatballs.
  3. Brown the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally. Drain excess fat.
  4. Pour the marinara sauce over the meatballs in the skillet. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes.
  5. Preheat your broiler.
  6. Split the submarine rolls lengthwise. Place the meatballs and sauce inside the rolls.
  7. Top each sub with provolone cheese.
  8. Place the subs on a baking sheet and broil for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • You can bake the meatballs instead of pan-frying them for less mess.
  • Use high-quality marinara sauce for better flavor.
