Ingredients

  • 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic burn.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir to combine.
  5. Add the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Add sugar if you are using it.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and let it cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Longer cooking times deepen the flavor.
  7. Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings as needed before serving.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree the sauce after cooking.
  • You can add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the garlic for a little heat.
  • This sauce freezes well for later use. Cool completely before transferring to freezer-safe containers.
