Description
Simple recipe for small, deep-fried corn dog pieces.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 pound hot dogs, cut into thirds
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Skewer each piece of hot dog with a toothpick or small wooden skewer.
- Dip each hot dog piece into the batter, letting excess drip off.
- Carefully place the battered hot dogs into the hot oil, frying in batches. Do not overcrowd the pot.
- Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides.
- Remove the corn dogs from the oil and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve hot with your preferred dipping sauces.
Notes
- You can use a deep fryer if you have one for more consistent oil temperature.
- If you do not have a thermometer, the oil is ready when a drop of batter sizzles immediately and floats to the top.
