Description

Simple recipe for small, deep-fried corn dog pieces.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound hot dogs, cut into thirds
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Skewer each piece of hot dog with a toothpick or small wooden skewer.
  6. Dip each hot dog piece into the batter, letting excess drip off.
  7. Carefully place the battered hot dogs into the hot oil, frying in batches. Do not overcrowd the pot.
  8. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides.
  9. Remove the corn dogs from the oil and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve hot with your preferred dipping sauces.

Notes

  • You can use a deep fryer if you have one for more consistent oil temperature.
  • If you do not have a thermometer, the oil is ready when a drop of batter sizzles immediately and floats to the top.
