Description
A recipe for a classic red velvet layer cake topped with rich cream cheese frosting.

- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix the vegetable oil and granulated sugar. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, white vinegar, and red food coloring. Set aside.
- In a third bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the frosting, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add the vanilla extract. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the layers and the top and sides of the cake.
Notes
- For best results, use room temperature ingredients for the cake and frosting.
- Do not overmix the cake batter once the flour is added.
- You can chill the cake layers briefly before frosting for easier handling.
