Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large eggs
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup bourbon or rum (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until simmering, but not boiling.
- Gradually whisk the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 160°F). Do not boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the bourbon or rum (if using), vanilla extract, and nutmeg.
- Pour the eggnog into a pitcher and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Serve cold, garnished with a sprinkle of nutmeg or a cinnamon stick.
Notes
- For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon or rum.
- You can adjust the amount of sugar to your preference.
- Ensure the eggnog reaches 160°F to safely consume the eggs.
