Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup bourbon or rum (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until simmering, but not boiling.
  3. Gradually whisk the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 160°F). Do not boil.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the bourbon or rum (if using), vanilla extract, and nutmeg.
  6. Pour the eggnog into a pitcher and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
  7. Serve cold, garnished with a sprinkle of nutmeg or a cinnamon stick.

  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon or rum.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar to your preference.
