Ingredients

- 1 (750 ml) bottle red wine (such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 8 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- 2–4 tablespoons maple syrup or honey (to taste)
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
Instructions
- Combine red wine, orange slices, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise in a large saucepan or slow cooker.
- Heat over medium-low heat, or on low in a slow cooker, for at least 15-20 minutes, or up to 3 hours, allowing the flavors to meld. Do not boil.
- Stir in maple syrup or honey to your desired sweetness.
- If using, stir in brandy.
- Serve warm in mugs, garnishing with an extra orange slice or cinnamon stick if desired.
Notes
- For a non-alcoholic version, substitute red wine with cranberry juice or grape juice.
- Adjust sweetener to your preference.
- Mulled wine can be kept warm on low heat for several hours.
